Amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, I stepped into the Chief’s office, finding him staring at his computer screen with a tired expression. "Chief, let me guess..." I started, but he interrupted with a weary nod. "First thing tomorrow morning, my office," he said, his voice lacking its usual vigor.
Seated across from him, I braced myself for what I assumed would be another uneventful day. "What’s the matter this time?" I asked, trying to infuse some energy into the conversation.
"It’s just one bill, buddy," the Chief admitted, sounding almost resigned. "A fake $50 note passed at a corner store."
I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. "You called me in for one bill?" I exclaimed, feeling the frustration building within me. "Surely there’s more pressing matters at hand."
The Chief’s shoulders sagged. "I know, but it’s all we’ve got," he said, his tone defeated. "We need to follow every lead, no matter how insignificant it may seem."
Reluctantly, I made my way to the forensic lab, already dreading the mundane task ahead. "Any luck with the bill?" I asked Sarah, our counterfeit currency expert, trying to inject some enthusiasm into the conversation.
She shook her head, mirroring my own disillusionment. "It’s just one bill," she sighed. "But we’ll take a look anyway."
