Turns out the question relates to an old bug in the Texas Instruments calculator series (TI-35).

The answer expected was produced by entering e^(1.000000001) in the TI-35 series, which is 2.7191928
Did you have to buy a Ti 35 or were you able to replicate the bug in modern software? How exactly did the Ti 35 evaluate the limit incorrectly when calculating exp(x).=?
